Teen scuba diving continues to grow in popularity at Sail Caribbean’s teen adventure camps.  In 2010, Sail Caribbean's 31st year of operation, over 75% of enrolled teens participated in a scuba diving course in addition to learning to sail during the summer program.  To date, Sail Caribbean and its PADI Five-Star Instructor Development Center, Sail Caribbean Divers, have introduced thousands of campers to the underwater world around Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

The diversity of scuba diving sites in the British Virgin Islands is as impressive as their abundance. Wrecks, reefs, and creatures of the deep are huge attractions for young people considering teen adventure camps. This fascinating location coupled with Sail Caribbean's dive staff specializing in teen PADI scuba diving instruction has resulted in consistent annual increases in scuba participation.

In 2010, approximately 70% of Sail Caribbean's enrolled teens were not previously certified divers.  Half of them achieved their PADI Open Water Diver certification during the summer and then continued their dive education with advanced courses.  And another 20% of those incoming students tried diving for the first time with PADI's Discover Scuba Diving course.  Sail Caribbean also continues to attract experienced divers.  31% of Sail Caribbean's enrollment in 2010 teen adventure camps were already certified scuba divers.

Sail Caribbean is utilizing the teen PADI eLearning Open Water course enabling students to complete ‘out of the water’ learning online prior to arriving in the Caribbean. eLearning offers the advantage of being able to begin the actual diving portion of the course sooner after arrival in Tortola. Students have reacted enthusiastically to ‘hitting’ the water sooner than ever before, and taking their first giant stride off a Sail Caribbean custom dive boat.

Once they experience the thrill and adventure of scuba diving, teen PADI divers most often want to continue their dive education, become certified, then proceed to obtain advanced certifications and specialties. During Sail Caribbean summer 2010 teen scuba diving sessions, 60% of the Open Water students also earned Advanced Open Water Certification.  In addition, 55% of those who joined these teen adventure camps with prior Advanced Open Water Certification earned Rescue Diver and Master Scuba Diver Certifications plus several PADI Specialty certifications.

The first professional scuba certification level, PADI Divemaster, is available to students who are at least 18 years old, have Rescue Diver Certification, proof of current CPR and first aid, and 40 logged dives. 63% of eligible students attained their Divemaster certification during Sail Caribbean 2010 teen scuba diving programs.

Following the teen scuba diving programs, Divemaster students stay in the Caribbean to earn their Open Water Scuba Instructor certification through an Instructor Development Course provided by Sail Caribbean Divers’ PADI Course Director, Mike Rowe.
